The IMBC is one of Europe's newest institutions, founded in 1987 as an independent research organisation by the then Greek Ministry of Industry, Energy, Research and Technology, under the direct supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. A modern competitive research organisation, it is widely recognised as one of the leading institutions in the Mediterranean, at the forefront of certain fields of marine research. Its most significant role at present lies in the promotion of multi-disciplinary research in which many European scientific institutes and organisations collaborate in international projects with emphasis being placed upon advances in the marine sciences, fisheries research, applied environmental research and the introduction of new aquaculture species.
