WINDY is a new 148 foot , traditional 4 masted gaff topsail schooner. She carries 4839 sq. feet of sail., a draft of 8 feet and a beam of 25 feet. Windy is the only certified four masted traditional sailing vessel in the USA and is a Class "B" Tall Ship. Built with modern materials but trimmed in highly varnished wood , the Windy has all the character and charm of the great day of sail. .

WINDY sails from the newly rebuilt Navy pier at the east end of Grand Avenue. A two hour skyline cruise is a favorite. Private charter and Education programs are available. For reservation and rates call 312 595-5555

COMMENTS This 4 masted 100 ton schooner has been a dream of Capt. Robert Marthai for several years he had hoped to sail out of historical Charleston where he had operated his schooner Pride for several years unable to find local dockage for a ship of this size he built it for Chicago. I am happy to welcome Windy as the biggest and newest schooner to the Lake Michigan Fleet. This Tall Sailing Ship shows Bob love of the tradition but yet has given way to safety item such as bow thruster for docking and a 300 hp Cumming diesel. She was built by Southern Windjammer and Detyen shipyard both of Charleston S.C.. Her computer aid cutout parts were provided by Jeffery' s Steel, Inc. of Mobil, Al. The aft cabin is one of my favorite spots on the ship with a large galley and the warm room feel to it. I had a good time helping Bob do some of the last fitting out on the Windy. It was a real joy to be at the helm of the Windy this spring in Charleston. Best wishes to Capt. Marthai and family.
