Empowered by the overwhelming audience and critical response to the festival, Cinequest (January 30-February 5, 1997) moves ahead by restucturing its core into a competition: Known for its eclectic mix of independent films presented in a personable environment, Cinequest announces an exciting new competitive section. This year, a jury will give the following awards: Best Dramatic Feature, Best Comedy Feature , Best Documentary and Best Short.
Seven years ago, in the exciting world of film festivals, Cinequest, the San Jose Film Festival made its debut in the heart of the Silicon Valley as an original festival designed to appeal to international filmmakers, film buyers and film fans and the diversity of the Silicon Valley.
Two years ago, Cinequest began producing specialty sections designed to augment its core of independent films. A Latino Celebration was inaugurated to mirror one of the booming communities of San Jose. At the same time, an After-Hours section was created to meet the interest of late birds and college-based audiences. Inspired by the success of these new sections, last year Cinequest introduced an Asian Celebration. Cinequest also presented some of the Bay Area's leaders in media technology as part of its first High-tech and Film Showcase.
Organizers expect this year's new addition, Cinequest's Competitive Section, to follow suit and continue building Cinequest into one of North America's strongest festivals. Details on prizes will be announced on November 1, 1996.
